Daily Water Intake

A rough guide to how much fluid to aim for.

Education and reference only. Not a substitute for clinical judgement, local policy or product labelling. Always verify before clinical use. Values are calculated in your browser and never stored.

When to use

Use as a rough guide to a daily fluid target based on body weight.

Why use

A common guide is around 30–35 ml of fluid per kg of body weight, though needs rise with heat, exercise and illness.

Advice

This is only a guide (about 1.5–2 litres for many adults). Drink more in hot weather, when exercising or if unwell. Pale, straw-coloured urine suggests good hydration. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks all count.
