Emergency Medicine

Shock Index

Heart rate divided by systolic BP.

Education and reference only. Not a substitute for clinical judgement, local policy or product labelling. Always verify before clinical use. Values are calculated in your browser and never stored.

When to use

Use as a quick marker of haemodynamic compromise, e.g. in haemorrhage or sepsis; a rising index can precede overt hypotension.

Why use

It can flag occult shock earlier than blood pressure alone.

Evidence & references

  1. Shock index = HR / SBP. Normal ≈ 0.5–0.7.
