Waist-to-Hip Ratio

Fat distribution as a heart-health marker.

Education and reference only. Not a substitute for clinical judgement, local policy or product labelling. Always verify before clinical use. Values are calculated in your browser and never stored.

When to use

Use to assess how fat is distributed between your waist and hips, which relates to heart and metabolic risk.

Why use

A higher waist-to-hip ratio (an "apple" shape) is linked to greater cardiovascular risk than fat carried on the hips.

Advice

Risk thresholds differ by sex (roughly ≥0.85 for women and ≥0.90 for men indicate higher risk), so interpret alongside your overall health. Waist-to-height ratio is often preferred as a single simple measure.
