Barium Swallow

A barium swallow is an X-ray test where you drink a chalky liquid containing barium so that your gullet, stomach and upper bowel show up clearly on X-rays.

Quick answer

Barium Swallow: what it is and what the results mean

A barium swallow (and the related barium meal) is a type of X-ray examination that uses a contrast liquid containing barium sulfate. Because barium blocks X-rays, it outlines the inside of the upper digestive tract as you swallow it.

  • Why it is done: It is used to investigate swallowing difficulty, reflux, unexplained vomiting, and to look for narrowing, ulcers, hernias, pouches or tumours in the oesophagus and stomach when a camera test is not suitable or not needed.
  • Understanding results: The radiologist reports how the barium flows and outlines the structures, showing whether swallowing is normal or whether there is narrowing, reflux, a hernia or another abnormality that may need further tests or treatment.

What it is

A barium swallow (and the related barium meal) is a type of X-ray examination that uses a contrast liquid containing barium sulfate. Because barium blocks X-rays, it outlines the inside of the upper digestive tract as you swallow it.

Why it is done

It is used to investigate swallowing difficulty, reflux, unexplained vomiting, and to look for narrowing, ulcers, hernias, pouches or tumours in the oesophagus and stomach when a camera test is not suitable or not needed.

What to expect

You usually avoid eating beforehand. You drink the barium liquid while standing or lying against an X-ray table, sometimes turning position, as a radiologist watches the barium move on a live X-ray (fluoroscopy). It takes about 15–30 minutes.

Understanding the results

The radiologist reports how the barium flows and outlines the structures, showing whether swallowing is normal or whether there is narrowing, reflux, a hernia or another abnormality that may need further tests or treatment.

Risks and limitations

The test uses X-ray radiation. Barium can cause temporary constipation and makes stools pale for a day or two — drinking extra fluids helps. It is avoided if a blockage or perforation is suspected. Tell staff if you may be pregnant.

Answers

Barium Swallow: frequently asked questions

Will the barium make me constipated?

Barium can cause mild constipation and pale-coloured stools for a day or two. Drinking plenty of water afterwards usually resolves it.

Is a barium swallow instead of an endoscopy?

They give different information. Endoscopy looks directly inside and can take samples, while a barium swallow shows how swallowing works and the overall shape of the tract. Your doctor chooses based on your symptoms.
