Uric Acid Test

A uric acid test measures the level of urate in your blood. It is used mainly to help investigate and manage gout, where high urate forms painful crystals in joints.

Quick answer

Uric Acid Test: what it is and what the results mean

Uric acid (urate) is a waste product from the breakdown of substances called purines. A blood test measures its level, which, when high, can form crystals that cause gout.

  • Why it is done: It is used to help assess gout, to monitor urate-lowering treatment, and sometimes in kidney stones or certain other conditions where urate is relevant.
  • Understanding results: A high urate supports the diagnosis of gout in the right setting, though gout can occur with a normal level and a high level does not always cause symptoms.

What it is

Uric acid (urate) is a waste product from the breakdown of substances called purines. A blood test measures its level, which, when high, can form crystals that cause gout.

Why it is done

It is used to help assess gout, to monitor urate-lowering treatment, and sometimes in kidney stones or certain other conditions where urate is relevant.

What to expect

It is a standard blood test from the arm. During an acute gout attack the level can be misleading, so testing is sometimes timed for a few weeks afterwards.

Understanding the results

A high urate supports the diagnosis of gout in the right setting, though gout can occur with a normal level and a high level does not always cause symptoms. In treatment, the aim is often to bring urate below a target to prevent attacks.

Good to know

Risks and limitations

The blood test is very safe. Because urate can be normal during an attack and raised without symptoms, the result is interpreted alongside the clinical picture rather than alone.

Answers

Uric Acid Test: frequently asked questions

Does a normal uric acid rule out gout?

No. Urate can be normal during an acute attack, so a normal result does not exclude gout. If gout is suspected, testing may be repeated a few weeks after the attack settles.

What level of uric acid causes gout?

There is no single cut-off — some people with high urate never get gout, while others have attacks at lower levels. In treatment, a target urate is often set to prevent future attacks.
