Adult vaccine
Vaccines and a Weakened Immune System
People with a weakened immune system may need extra vaccines and should usually avoid live vaccines — an individual plan is made with their medical team.
What it protects against
Vaccination protects people with weakened immunity (for example from certain conditions, treatments such as chemotherapy, or medicines that suppress the immune system) against infections that could be especially serious for them.
Who it's for
People whose immune system is weakened by illness or treatment, who may be offered additional vaccines and are protected further by those around them being vaccinated.
How it works
Inactivated vaccines are used to build protection safely. Live vaccines are usually avoided because they could cause infection in someone with very weak immunity; timing around treatment is planned carefully.
Safety
Safety and side effects
Inactivated vaccines are safe, though they may work less well when the immune system is suppressed, which is why extra doses and protecting close contacts matter. Live vaccines are generally not given — the team advises individually.

Answers
Vaccines and a Weakened Immune System: frequently asked questions
Can people with weakened immune systems have vaccines?
Yes, and they are often especially important, but usually only inactivated (non-live) vaccines. Live vaccines are generally avoided. The exact plan depends on the condition and treatment and is decided with the medical team.
Why does it matter if my family is vaccinated?
If your own immune response is weaker, having vaccinated household members and close contacts reduces the chance they bring infections home to you — a protective ring sometimes called cocooning.
