Travel vaccine
Yellow Fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine protects against a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes, and is required for entry to some countries.
What it protects against
It protects against yellow fever, a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa and South America, which can cause fever, jaundice and, in severe cases, life-threatening illness.
Who it's for
Travellers to areas where yellow fever is present. Some countries legally require a certificate of vaccination for entry. It is given only at registered yellow fever vaccination centres.
How it works
It is a live but weakened form of the virus that gives strong, long-lasting protection, usually from a single dose.
Safety
Safety and side effects
It is generally safe and effective, but as a live vaccine it is not suitable for everyone — including some people with weakened immune systems, certain ages, and pregnancy — so an individual assessment is done. Serious reactions are rare.
Education and reference only. This is general information, not a personal recommendation, and does not list doses — follow the current NHS schedule and your clinician's advice. Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction after any vaccine.
Answers
Yellow Fever Vaccine: frequently asked questions
Do I need a certificate for yellow fever vaccination?
Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination for entry, sometimes even if you are just passing through. A registered yellow fever centre will issue this and advise on requirements for your route.
Is one dose of yellow fever vaccine enough?
For most people a single dose gives long-lasting, often lifelong, protection. A registered centre will confirm what you need based on current guidance and your destination.
