Travel vaccine

Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccine protects against rabies, a virus spread by animal bites that is almost always fatal once symptoms start. It is used for travel and after possible exposure.

What it protects against

It protects against rabies, a viral infection spread mainly through bites or scratches from infected animals (often dogs), which attacks the nervous system and is nearly always fatal once symptoms develop.

Who it's for

Travellers to areas where rabies is present, especially for long trips or activities with higher animal contact, some occupations, and anyone who may have been exposed (as urgent post-exposure treatment).

How it works

It contains inactivated rabies virus, prompting protective antibodies. It can be given before travel (pre-exposure) or, crucially, after a possible exposure to prevent the disease developing.

Safety

Safety and side effects

It is safe and well tolerated, with common effects being soreness at the injection site, headache and tiredness. After a possible exposure, prompt vaccination is essential and safe.

Answers

Rabies Vaccine: frequently asked questions

What should I do if bitten by an animal abroad?

Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for several minutes and seek medical help urgently, even if you have been vaccinated before, as you may need further doses. Rabies is preventable with prompt treatment but almost always fatal once symptoms start.

Do I need the rabies vaccine before travelling?

It depends on your destination, trip length and activities. A travel clinic can assess whether pre-travel vaccination is recommended for you, especially for remote areas far from medical care.
